Have you thought about where your coffee cups end up once you’ve thrown it away? With MPs calling for a 25p “latte levy” on disposable coffee cups to help reduce waste, the time for a reusable option is even more prominent!

Each year, 100 billion single use coffee cups end up as landfill or even worse discarded into our natural habitats and it simply has to stop.  Making the correct choice as a company (or individual) is essential, choose to offer your customers something environmentally responsible and build their loyalty at the same time.

We’ve taken a look at what’s currently available on the market and chosen our top 3:

  1. Reusable Puro Bamboo Cups (feature image): Made with natural bamboo fibres – one of the world’s most sustainable resources. It’s not only environmentally friendly but health conscious too being BPA and phthalate free and at just 160g, it’s light, sturdy and fully dishwasher safe. It also has a resealable ‘no-drip’ lid. The ‘closer to nature’ design of this cup will have your customers grabbing for it everyday to make sure you fill it up with something tasty!
  2. Sugarcane Paper Cups: Produced from the sugarcane fiber remnant’s remaining after the extraction of juice from sugarcane, these cups are the ‘sweetest’ you’ll find. The benefits of sugarcane being not only an annually renewable resource, but its use multiple uses for producing products normally made from plastic or paper makes it a desirable ingredient and with the added benefit of being partially biodegradable and made from recycled ingredients makes it a winner all round. Available in a sleek black design, sure to fit in within any trendy coffee bar.
  3. 100% Biodegradable Cup & lids: They really do what they say! Made from certified FSC board with a starch based compostable lining, these cups are 100% compostable too, so very kind to the environment. Keeping it classic with a white design, these cups will always be popular and with the additional option of adding a personalised sleeve, these cups will leave you knowing you’re doing good, whilst looking good too!

Peru has always been known for its vast rainforests, encompassing a wide range of wildlife. It is also known for its coffee production, which unfortunately has been rapidly decreasing over the past few years.

Southern Peru is the main spot for coffee farming and was once a way of life for many living there, however, this has begun to change. The mass amount of coffee that was produced in Peru has fallen to almost 10% of what it once was. A common problem, that is also apparent in other countries, is the spread of “Yellow Rust” within Peru. Yellow Rust is a fungus that attacks and normally kills coffee plants. This has made it very difficult for farmers to carry on returning a profitable yield and has forced them into other trades. An area in southern Peru, Tunkimayo, was known for coffee, where 60 active farmers used to live. This number has drastically decreased to just 6. This shows the effect that Yellow Rust is having on the trade.

Most of the farmers that were unable to carry on coffee farming have turned to growing coca plants. The coca plant is known for being the main ingredient in cocaine. This is has been backed up by a huge increase in the amount of coca leaf plantations, which is growing at annual rate of 10%. The local government are trying to combat this issue, but it appears their efforts may be wasted.

For anyone that is involved in coffee, this is surely a very concerning issue.

When you thought you had seen it all, the “Avolatte” appears and you question society.

The Avolatte is, as you guessed it, a latte in an empty avocado shell. Even though the drink was intentionally created as a tongue-in-cheek joke towards Millennials’ food habits, the latte has become quite popular.

The Truman Cafe in Melbourne, Australia, is the birthplace of this drink and stated that it only started as a video on Instagram, with no intention of selling the latte. However, people have been asking for them, where the cafe has kindly accommodated to their requests and charged the same price as a normal latte.

This latte was purposely made after an interview with millionaire Tim Gurner, who mentioned that Millennials should stop purchasing avocado and fancy coffee, if they want to own their own home, which was obviously met with a lot negative backlash. The popularity of the coffee could be a fun way of “rebelling” against the older generation that believe Millennials can’t eat avocado if they want their own house.

Reports have suggested that the drink doesn’t actually taste that great, but if you’re wanting to rebel in a unique way, then the avolatte is just the thing for you.

A latte to match your soul… Just kidding!

In recent times, the rise of unicorn multi coloured lattes has been very much apparent. This may make the introduction of the goth latte, a welcome one. Not only does the goth latte look amazing (which makes it perfect for your Instagram), it’s healthy too.

The special ingredient is activated charcoal. This is what gives the latte its colour and also the health benefits. This is because charcoal has already been proven to have a detoxing effect on the digestive system. Not only this, but charcoal also helps combat bloating and increases your energy levels.

The latte has already been introduced in some cafes within the UK and Australia, but we are sure you will see the goth latte in your local cafe very soon.

Looking to make your own? Why not try this recipe from Brit+Co

Yes you read that correctly, someone has managed to create a phone case that actually allows you to make an expresso, from your smartphone case!

For all the coffee lovers out there, it seems like a dream come true, because it is! The case acts as a type of pod machine, but instead of pods, you insert a small thin wafer. The case then safely warms the wafer up, through an app on your phone, which creates the espresso, then and there. The espresso can then be poured out through a small hole in the top of the case.

There are a range of different versions of the case that will fit Samsung’s, iPhone’s and many others. Furthermore, when the case is purchased, it comes with a small pop up espresso cup which can be used as a keyring, to save as much space as possible.

The Italian company named Smart K, started trialling this product at first on Kickstarter, but due to its popularity they have scrapped the campaign and have started full production. The case will be available for pre order in the near future and is expected to retail at around £67.

Seems too good to be true!

As coffee has become more and more popular, the worry of the effect it has on our health has also risen. However, according to a recent study, drinking up to four cups of coffee a day, has no health risks whatsoever.

The study was completed by analysing over 740 past studies, which shows the depth of their analysis. These studies highlighted risk to bones, the heart, the brain, the reproductive system and toxicity of the body. The study revealed that consuming 4 cups of coffee a day (400g of caffeine) has no negative effect to your health, as long as this amount is not exceeded.

However, as the amount of caffeine in each coffee can vary and caffeine is present in other products such as tea, it is important to keep track of your consumption.

So it appears that as long as you drink your coffee in moderation, it won’t pose any risk to your health any time soon.

A company named CLR CFF has created a clear bottle of coffee. It looks like water, but is said to taste just like cold brew cup of coffee.

The drink was created by a pair of Slovakian brothers, who are big coffee drinkers themselves. The achieved this by treating high quality arabica coffee beans with “methods which have never been used”. The main reason for creating this coffee is due to the staining that can occur when drinking coffee. The drink does not stain your teeth, nor does it stain your clothing if you were to spill it.

The new drink is packaged in a bottle, meaning you can drink it on the go or even make cocktails with it. It would be interesting to find out if it tasted just as good as freshly made cup of cold brew coffee.

In recent times, coffee has become more and more popular. This means that the amount of disposable coffee cups used, has also risen and has lead to huge amount of waste. The estimated amount of waste created by coffee users is around 2.5 billion disposable cups, every year. This is a big problem.

Coffee shops now see how much of a problem this is and have started to encourage customers to recycle.

PAUL, a coffee chain, is offering incentives to customers to encourage them to recycle. They are offering a 10p discount to those that bring their own reusable coffee cups. They are also selling their own reusable cups in store.

Pret A Manger are also providing a discount, but of 25p, to those that bring their own reusable coffee cups. This is only a trial at the moment, which will run till the end of the month.

Finally, Costa are also providing a discount of 25p to those that use a reusable coffee cup. Not only this, they are also asking for consumers to bring any disposable coffee cups they have to any Costa store and they will be recycled.

A study has been undertaken to investigate whether this environmental push will help cut down waste. The study showed that this initiative should cut the waste by around 300 million cups per year, which is great news!

Hopefully all can get on board and start to cut the amount of waste left by coffee users.

The coffee philosophy has always been the fresher the better. The quicker the beans are delivered, the better. The quicker the beans are roasted, the better. The closer the beans are ground before using, the better. So why is there now a coffee farm arguing that fermenting the beans could actually create better quality beans?

Mariano Martins is the coffee farmer responsible for this experimental technique. The new technique was adapted from a way to combat the humidity that is present in Brazil. Martins has become an expert in microbiology which developed from visiting a farm in Colombia, where he learnt their techniques of how to combat the humidity. Since there he has now hired a biologist and chemistry engineer to further his studies.

Fermenting may sound like a horrible word but let us explain what happens when fermenting coffee. Microorganisms such as yeast and bacteria are used to slow the oxidisation process which takes place in coffee. In normal English, this means the coffee beans will actually lost longer if they are fermented before shipping. The fermentation process does create different tastes within the coffee such as dehydrated bananas and according to reports hints of tutti frutti!

The coffee beans are now available to purchase in small multi coloured tins, so keep an eye out if you want to give it a go!
